As much knowledge about art that I have, I still end up learning new things in the strangest ways. I was watching YouTube planner videos on budget bullet journals (because hello, obsession) and of course, I started to go down the rabbit hole. Somehow I found a video about blending with colored pencils, which intrigued me because it’s probably the medium that I’m best at. Markers are still a work in progress, and while I’m decent with watercolor, I don’t do it often enough to get better at it. A lot of that is a space issue. But colored pencils, I can do just about anywhere, and they don’t take up much room.
So this video is about using Gamsol, which is actually meant for oil painting, I believe, to blend colored pencils. So naturally I had to play with it. If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll have seen some of the stuff that came from my playing with it.
I started with a little Christmas light bulb…
So then I got brave. I started watching watercolor videos. Specifically, I watched this one from JennyJournals and decided to try to copy the style of it and see if I could produce something that looked like watercolor with colored pencils. My end result was a little messy, but I really liked how it turned out, and I had a lot of fun doing it.
I think I’m gonna keep going with this and do some playing around and test the limits of the technique. The more I use it, the more I figure out how to do it. It’s one thing to watch others do it, but it’s entirely different ballgame to figure out how to do it yourself. It’s been so much fun to play with. Let’s see what else I can come up with this week.
